Plot:  At the end of the 15th century, two minstrels Gilles and Dominique come from nowhere into the castle of Baron Hugues. Gilles charms Anne, Hughes' daughter, while Dominique charms both Hugues and Ann's fiance. Gilles and Dominique are not really in love : they are sent by the Devil to desperate people. But Ann is so pure that Gilles is caught to his own trap... How will they fight against the Devil ?
Rotten Tomatoes:   Supposedly a metaphor for Hitler's occupation of France, on the surface this is a fairy tale about Satan's determined interference between two lovers in fifteenth century France. Of course, like all fairytales, true love will always find a way. If Hitler had realized that this was meant to signify his inability to blunt the spirit of the French, he undoubtedly would have squelched its release, which happened after the Nazis occupied France.

Plot:  Two drifters go on a pilgrimage from France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Along the way, they hitchhike, beg for food, and face the Christian dogmas and heresies from different Ages.
Rotten Tomatoes:   Religious pilgrims Pierre (Paul Frankeur) and Jean (Laurent Terzieff) journey to a shrine in the north of Spain. Their faith is severely tested by some of the irreverent characters they confront in the course of their pilgrimage. Even chance meetings with Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Devil are not quite what Pierre and Jean have been prepared for in their religious training. Filmmaker Luis Buñuel's ongoing disdain of Roman Catholicism reaches a satiric pinnacle in The Milky Way, which contains all the logic of a daydream and all the reverence of breaking wind at the Confessional. Need we add: this is not a remake of the 1936 Harold Lloyd comedy The Milky Way.

Plot:  Emmanuelle is a beautiful young model and lives in Bangkok together with her husband Jean, who's several years older. She likes him because he's taught her much, and he likes her because she's learning so well - and wants to often. Both are very tolerant in matters of extramarital affairs, so he doesn't mind the young Marie-Ange coming over every so often, although she obviously wants more than talk from his wife. But Emmanuelle is more fascinated by the older Bee, and joins her on a trip into the jungle.
Rotten Tomatoes:   This film is the first of the French softcore-porn series about a young woman's awakening to new sexual dimensions. Emmanuelle is the suppressed wife of a diplomat. By virtue of her husband's profession, the sheltered Emmanuelle is introduced to any number of handsome, virile men and beautiful, adventurous women.

Plot:  In the fascist Italy of 1935, a painter trained as a doctor is exiled to a remote region near Eboli. Over time, he learns to appreciate the beauty and wisdom of the peasants, and to overcome his isolation.
Rotten Tomatoes:   Based on exiled Italian political radical Carlo Levi's autobiographical novel, this thought-provoking, subtle drama chronicles his life after he is forcibly sent to live in a primitive and isolated southern Italian alpine village during the '30s when Mussolini was in power. The film is also known as Eboli.

Plot:  Paris, 1482. Today is the festival of the fools, taking place like each year in the square outside Cathedral Notre Dame. Among jugglers and other entertainers, Esmeralda, a sensuous gypsy, performs a bewitching dance in front of delighted spectators. From up in a tower of the cathedral, Frollo, an alchemist, gazes at her lustfully. Later in the night, Frollo orders Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer and his faithful servant, to kidnap Esmeralda. But when the ugly freak comes close to her is touched by the young woman's beauty...
Rotten Tomatoes:   Better known as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, this opulent French production is the second talkie version of Victor Hugo's famous novel. Buried under mounds of latex, Anthony Quinn does his best as the deformed bellringer Quasimodo, though he comes off more as a punchdrunk ex-pug than a literal interpretation of Hugo's tragic protagonist. Somewhat more effective within the film's framework is Gina Lollobrigida as gypsy dancing girl Esmerelda, whose friendship with Quasimodo motivates the story. As in previous adaptations of the Hugo novel, the villain Frolio (Alain Cluny), originally a priest, is given a less-controversial station in life: in this case, he is an alchemist rather than a man of the cloth. Otherwise, Notre Dame de Paris is one of the more faithful renditions of the original novel, even unto retaining Hugo's unhappy ending. When first released in the U.S. by Allied Artists, the film was titled Hunchback of Paris, to avoid a copyright conflict with RKO's 1939 adaptation of Hunchback of Notre Dame.
