Abdullah Ibrahim![]() | ||
| Allmusic Biography : The melodic sounds of South Africa are fused with the improvisation of jazz and the technical proficiency of classical music by South Africa-born pianist Dollar Brand or, as hes called himself since converting to Islam in 1968, Abdullah Ibrahim. Since attracting international acclaim as a member of the Jazz Epistles, one of South Africas first jazz bands, he has continued to explore new ground with his imaginative playing. Exposed to a variety of music as a youngster, including traditional African music, religious songs, and jazz, Brand began studying piano at the age of seven. Becoming a professional musician in 1949, he performed with such South African groups as the Tuxedo Slickers and the Willie Max Big Band. Ten years later, he joined the Jazz Epistles, a group featuring trumpet player Hugh Masekela and alto saxophonist Kippi Moeketsi. The band, which had been formed in 1959 by American pianist John Mehegan for a recording session, Jazz in Africa, had recorded the first jazz album by South African musicians. In 1962, Brand left South Africa with vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin; the two were married in 1965, and temporarily settled in Zurich. Performing with his trio, which featured bassist Johnny Gertze and drummer Makaya Ntshoko, Brand was heard by Duke Ellington at the Africana Club. Ellington was so impressed that he arranged a recording session for Brand and the trio. The resulting album, Duke Ellington Presents the Dollar Brand Trio, was released on the Reprise label in 1963. He continued to be supported by Ellington following the albums release. In addition to being booked to play (at Ellingtons urging) at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1965, Brand served as Ellingtons substitute and performed five shows with the Ellington Orchestra the following year. Shortly afterwards, he disbanded the trio and accepted an invitation to join Elvin Jones quartet. The collaboration with Jones lasted six months. After leaving the Jones quartet, he continued to be involved with a variety of projects. Besides touring as a soloist in 1968, he worked with bands led by Don Cherry and Gato Barbieri. Briefly returning to South Africa in 1976, the now Abdullah Ibrahim settled in New York the same year. Although he returned to South Africa to live in 1990, he continued to divide his time between his birthplace and his adopted home in New York. In 1997, Ibrahim collaborated on an album and tour with jazz drummer Max Roach. The following year, Swiss composer Daniel Schnyder arranged several of his compositions for a 22-piece orchestra for a Swiss television production, and for a world tour undertaken by the full-sized Munich Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Barbara Yahr of the United States. Ibrahim continued to perform and record for the remainder of the 1990s and throughout the 2000s, releasing such notable albums as African Suite (1999, Enja), Cape Town Revisited (2000, Enja; recorded in 1997), Ekapa Lodumo (2001, Enja/Tiptoe), African Magic (2003, Enja/Justin Time), Senzo (2008, Sunnyside), and Bombella (2009, Intuition). Ibrahim has also composed the scores for such films as Chocolat and No Fear No Die. | ||

| African Sketchbook : Allmusic album Review : African Sketchbook is a superb example of the kind of solo concerts Abdullah Ibrahim (then known as Dollar Brand) performed early in his career. They were lengthy, non-stop affairs with pieces strung together end on end, sometimes repeated, sometimes with interpolations from Monk or Ellington, and always supremely creative and moving. He would often introduce the evenings with a composition for flute, as is the case here with the gorgeous "Air." After that, its wave upon wave of songs. Some are rhythmically propulsive numbers with Ibrahim vamping for all hes worth with the left hand while deftly evoking aspects of South Africa with the right. The songs tend to have a basis that may strike Western listeners as gospel-related while, in fact, its gospel that shows these same African roots. Other pieces have tinges of 20th century European classical music and some, like "Sadness," are simply and astoundingly beautiful. When the album ends with a repetition of the invocational "Salaam -- Peace -Hamba Kahle," one indeed feels as though having been on a whirlwind tour of a small portion of Africa. The recording quality leaves a little to be desired, but the wonderful music more than makes up for it. Highly recommended, especially for those who came to Ibrahims music later in his career and who are unfamiliar with his early, arguably more substantial work. | ||

| African Portraits : Allmusic album Review : Recorded at the same session that resulted in Sangoma, this Sackville album features Abdullah Ibrahim (as Dollar Brand) on a solo set sticking to originals. By 1973, Ibrahim very much had his own sound developed, blending together jazz with spiritualism, expertly utilizing repetition and the strong influence of his South African heritage. There are many recordings available by the unique pianist, and this set is an above-average and consistently stirring effort. | ||

| Soweto : Allmusic album Review : This obscure and long-out-of-print Chiaroscuro LP does not have any recording date listed, but it was recorded in Europe in 1965. Pianist Dollar Brand (aka Abdullah Ibrahim) is heard leading two groups comprised mostly of fellow expatriate South Africans -- a quartet with tenor saxophonist Basil Mannenberg and a septet. The three originals ("Soweto," "African Herbs" and "Sathima") are very much in Ibrahims mature style, full of rich melodies, expert use of repetition and percussive piano. On "African Herbs," he doubles effectively on soprano and electric piano. | ||

| African Suite - For Trio And String Orchestra : Allmusic album Review : African Suite presents Abdullah Ibrahims regular trio with bassist Belden Bullock and drummer George Gray along with a large string section drawn from the Youth Orchestra of the European Community. Daniel Schnyder crafted the arrangements, which are orchestral reworkings of some of Ibrahims compositions roughly spanning a 25-year period. The strings serve to heighten the evocative globalism of Ibrahims work, in which the pianists South African origin, Islamic faith, longtime European residence, and jazz immersion are incorporated with a dazzling imaginative breadth. Here perhaps more than ever before, Ibrahims piano is a subtle tool, coaxing the spare, singable melodies into being and generally hovering over the proceedings like a wise, almost detached presence. Both the pianist and the orchestra get a chance to shine alone, Ibrahim on "Aspen" and the orchestra on "Blanton." The latter, dedicated to the late Ellington bassist Jimmy Blanton, sounds uncannily like a jazz bassist bowing an arco solo. The rhythm section gets a bit busier on the slow-grooving "Ishmael," the rollicking "Tsakwe," the 6/4 sketch "Damara Blue," and the brooding funk piece "Tintinyana." For sheer eclecticism and catchiness, nothing beats the "All Blues"-style "Barakaat" and the African-soul-jazz finale "The Mountain of the Night." But the strings are integrated more effectively on the calmer numbers, especially "The Call" and an absolutely breathtaking arrangement of "The Wedding." One only wishes something could have been done about the audible hiss on parts of the recording. | ||
