Barry White
Allmusic Biography : Say the name Barry White and youd be hard pressed to follow it with the name of any other recording artist with such a huge, cross-sectional following. He was at home appearing on Soul Train, guesting with a full band on The Today Show, and appearing in cartoon form in various episodes of The Simpsons. During the 70s, Dinah Shore devoted a full hour of her daily syndicated Dinah! show to White. While there was a period where Barry White wasnt releasing records or making the pop charts, he did stay active touring and appearing on other artists records including Quincy Jones "The Secret Garden (The Seduction Suite)," Regina Belle, and rap star Big Daddy Kanes "All of Me." Its surprising to find out that such an illustrious career almost didnt happen because White wasnt interested in being a recording artist.

Born in Galveston, TX, Barry White grew up singing gospel songs with his mother and taught himself to play piano. Shortly after moving from Texas to South Central Los Angeles, White made his recording debut at the tender age of 11, playing piano on Jesse Belvins "Goodnight My Love." He made his first record when he was 16 with a group called the Upfronts. The song was called "Little Girl" on a local L.A. label called Lummtone Records. Later he worked for various independent labels around Los Angeles, landing an A&R; position with Bob Keane, the man responsible for the first pop recordings by Sam Cooke. One of his labels, Mustang, was hot at the time with a group called the Bobby Fuller Four in 1966. White was hired for 40 dollars a week to do A&R; for Keanes family of labels: Del-Fi, Mustang and Bronco. During this time, White flirted with the idea of being a recording artist, making a record for Bronco called "All in the Run of a Day." But he chose to stick with his A&R; duties. One of the first groups he worked with was the Versatiles who later changed their name to the 5th Dimension. Whites first big hit came from an artist familiar to dancefloor denizens -- Viola Wills, whose "Lost Without the Love of My Guy" went Top 20 R&B.; His salary went up to 60 dollars a week. White started working with the Bobby Fuller Four. Bob Keene and Larry Nunes -- who later became Whites spiritual advisor and true friend -- wanted to cut a female act. White had heard about a singer named Felice Taylor. They had three hit records, "It May Be Winter Outside," "Im Under the Influence of Love," and "I Feel Love Coming On." They were huge hits in England. White started making 400 dollars a week.

When Bronco went out of business, White began doing independent production. Those were some lean times for White. Veteran arranger Gene Page, who would later arrange or co-arrange Whites hits, helped him out, giving him work and non-repayable loans. Then three years later, Paul Politti, who also worked at Bronco, contacted him to tell him that Larry Nunes was interested in starting a business with him. Nunes had started cutting tracks for a concept album he was working on. Meanwhile, White had started working with this girl group who hadnt done any singing professionally. They rehearsed for almost a year. White wrote "Walkin in the Rain (With the One I Love)" with lyrics that were inspired by conversations with one of the singers, Glodean James (who would later become Whites second wife). White christened the group Love Unlimited.

Larry Nunes took the record to Russ Regan, who was the head of the Uni label owned by MCA. Love Unlimiteds From a Girls Point of View became a million-seller. Soon after, Regan left Uni for 20th Century Records. Without Regan, Whites relationship with Uni soured. With his relationship with Uni in chaos and Love Unlimited contract-bound with the label, White decided he needed to work with another act. He wanted to work with a male artist. He made three song demos of himself singing and playing the piano. Nunes heard them and insisted that he re-record and release them as a recording artist. They argued for days about it. Then he somehow convinced White to do it. White was still hesitating up to the time the label copy was made. He was going to use the name "White Heat," but the record became the first Barry White album. That first album was 1973s Ive Got So Much to Give on 20th Century Records. It included the title track and "Im Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby."

White got a release from Uni for Love Unlimited and they joined him over at 20th Century Records. Then he had a brainstorm for another concept album. He told Regan he wanted to do an instrumental album. Regan thought he had lost it. White wanted to call it the Love Unlimited Orchestra. The single, "Loves Theme," went to number one pop, was a million-seller, and was a smash all over the world. The song earned him a BMI award for over three million covers.

For the next five years, from 1974 to 1979, there was no stopping the Barry White Hit Train -- his own Stone Gon, Barry White Sings Love Songs for the One You Love ("Its Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me," "Playing Your Game Baby"), Let the Music Play (title track, "You See the Trouble with Me"), Just Another Way to Say I Love You ("Ill Do for You Anything You Want Me To," "Love Serenade"), The Man ("Your Sweetness Is My Weakness," "Sha La La Means I Love You," "September When We Met," a splendid cover of Billy Joels "Just the Way You Are"), and Love Unlimiteds In Heat ("I Belong to You," "Move Me No Mountain," "Share a Little Love in Your Heart," and "Loves Theme," with lyrics). He also scored a soundtrack for the 20th Century Fox film The Together Brothers, enjoying a resurgence on home video.

His studio band included such luminaries as guitarists Ray Parker, Jr. (pre-Raydio, co-writer with White on "You See the Trouble With Me"), bassist Nathan East, Wah Wah Watson, David T. Walker, Dean Parks, Don Peake, bassist Wilton Felder of the Crusaders, Lee Ritenour, drummer Ed Greene, percussionist Gary Coleman, and later keyboardist Rahn Coleman. His hit streak seemed, well, unlimited. Then it all derailed. Russ Regan and another ally, Hosea Wilson, left 20th Century Records and White was left with management that he thought of in less than glowing terms.

White left after fulfilling his contract with two more album releases, Love Unlimited Orchestras My Musical Bouquet and his own I Love to Sing the Songs I Sing. White signed a custom label deal with CBS Records. At the time it was touted as one of the biggest deals ever. He started a label called Unlimited Gold. The roster included White, Love Unlimited, the Love Unlimited Orchestra, Jack Perry, and a teenaged singer named Danny Pearson who charted with a song called "Whats Your Sign Girl." He also did a duet album with Glodean James called Barry & Glodean. Aside from the gold album The Message Is Love, most of the albums werent huge sellers. After eight Barry White albums, four Love Unlimited albums, four Love Unlimited Orchestra albums, constant touring, and dealing with the rigors of the music industry, White decided to take a break.

Then in 1992, White signed with A&M;, releasing the albums The Man Is Back, The Right Night & Barry White, and Put Me in Your Mix (which contains a duet with Issac Hayes, "Dark and Lovely"). The Icon Is Love became his biggest-selling album since the 70s releases, going multi-platinum. It includes the platinum single "Practice What You Preach." The production lineup includes Gerald Levert and Tony Nicholas, his godson Chuckii Booker, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and White and his longtime friend Jack Perry. While some later efforts buried his vocals in whiz-bang electronic effects, on The Icon Is Love, Whites deep steam engine baritone pipes are upfront in the mix. Staying Power followed in 1999, showcased in the best tradition of soul music where the focus is the singer and the song. The album earned White two Grammys. Whites career took him from the ghetto to international success with 106 gold and 41 platinum albums, 20 gold and ten platinum singles, with worldwide sales in excess of 100 million.

White, who suffered from hypertension and chronic high blood pressure, was hospitalized for kidney failure in September of 2002. He was undergoing dialysis treatment, but the combination of illnesses proved too much and he died July 4, 2003 at a West Hollywood hospital. By the time of his death, Barry White had achieved a near-universal acclaim and popularity that few artists achieve and even fewer within their own lifetime.

Stone Gon' : Allmusic album Review : Stone Gon was the second release in an incredible run of sensually charged titles White produced during the first half of the 70s. His patented mix of love monologues and rich vocal dynamics would come to mark the best songs of the period, including the two chart-toppers here, "Honey Please, Cant Ya See" and "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up." Of course, Whites inventive arrangements and crack band only add to the stock of these soulful pop excursions. And beyond the hits, tracks like "Youre My Baby" and "Hard to Believe That I Found You" maintain the high standard, compliments of mesmerizing backdrops and more vocal seduction; with wine and candlelight already casting a spell, its just a matter of time before Whites supremely tranquil delivery and blissed-out wash of strings and saxophone will cause the amatory to completely lose it. Bringing things back to earth, White displays unerring sensitivity on "Girl Its True, Yes Ill Always Love You," a love song as sincere and sanctified as any hes made. Essential listening.

I've Got So Much to Give : Allmusic album Review : Barry White turned into such iconic figure that it’s odd to hear his beginnings on his 1973 debut I’ve Got So Much to Give. In a sense, his sound is fully formed -- there’s no mistaking his velvet baritone or his lush, string-draped surrounding, particularly on the album’s closing “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More, Baby,” a song so seductive it set the pace for the rest of his career. Still, behind that creamy drapery it’s possible to hear a strong debt to Isaac Hayes throughout I’ve Got So Much to Give, particularly when the whole affair opens a slow, steady, eight-minute crawl through “Standing in the Shadows of Love” that strips all the bounciness out of the Supremes original, just like how all of Hayes reworkings of ‘60s pop hits turned the hit versions inside out on Hot Buttered Soul. Barry may be following in Isaac’s footsteps, but he winds up on his own path, one that isn’t quite as ambitious, one that is fairly hellbent on romance to the exclusion of everything else. Compared to what White did later, I’ve Got So Much to Give does display a fair amount of extraneous frills -- this is all about sex, but there are shifting textures and moods, it’s more serious about its seduction because White’s reputation as a loverman is not secure -- which makes it a richer, more interesting record than much of his body of work, perhaps containing some dead ends, but being all the more captivating for its slight touch of messiness. [Hip-O Select’s 2010 reissue contains instrumental tracks of “Just a Little More, Baby” and “I’ve Got so Much to Give” as bonus tracks.]

Can’t Get Enough : Allmusic album Review : The third in Whites mostly stellar run of albums on the 20th Century label, Cant Get Enough finds the bedroom alchemist coming up with another solid batch of lush, proto-disco gems. White went from strength to strength during the 70s, collaborating with co-arranger Gene Page on some of the most sophisticated and seamless charts in popular music (Philly soul architects Leon Huff, Kenny Gamble, and Thom Bell also deserve recognition in this regard). And thanks to an amazing succession of hits, White not only impressed the music cognoscenti, but repeatedly scored with the radio faithful, too -- Cant Get Enough features two of his biggest chart toppers, "Youre the First, the Last, My Everything" and "Cant Get Enough of Your Love, Babe." And besides the hits, its not just all padding here: "I Cant Believe You Love Me" and "Oh Love, Well We Finally We Made It" qualify as two of Whites most fetching slow burners, while "Mellow Mood (Pts. 1 & 2)" shows off his knack for layered instrumentals. Another highlight from Whites prime.

Just Another Way to Say I Love You : Allmusic album Review : With his 1973 debut, Ive Got So Much Love to Give White redefined the R&B and pop with his grand arrangements and pursuit of studio excellence. The frothy "Loves Theme" from his Love Unlimited Orchestra is considered influential early disco. By the time this was released, the sound was slightly on the wane. With his demanding schedule of cranking out an album or more a year, as well as work from Love Unlimited and Love Unlimited Orchestra This effort shows the strain. The album kicks off with "Heavenly, Thats What You Are To Me," and despite its great intro, it ultimately pales in comparison to earlier tracks. On "Ill Do for You Anything You Want Me To" finds White in ragged voice throughout and the onslaught on his grunts and groans didnt help him not be a parody of himself. Just Another Way to Say I Love You seems to cautiously plod along, but White had something innovative planned here. "Love Serenade" has him throwing all caution to the wind with lines like "I dont wanna feel no clothes," followed by the even better, "And take off that brassiere, my dear." As for regular ballads, "Let Me Live My Life Lovin You Babe" clocks in at a sleep-inducing 10:29. This album closes out with "Love Serenade (Part II)," a bass heavy, libidinous instrumental. This is not a horrible effort, but he no doubt could do much better.

Barry White’s Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Before a definitive multi-disc box set was issued in the 1990s, there were two single-album volumes of Barry White hits released by Casablanca in the 1970s. The first was the best, with sweeping versions of such disco classics as "Cant Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" and "Youre the First, the Last, My Everything." Whites productions and arrangements were never as intricate as they seemed, but his booming baritone and romantic dialogue sounded convincing when underscored by the lush backgrounds. If you only want a little Barry White, this is the album to grab.

Is This Whatcha Wont? : Allmusic album Review : After an incredible three-year run of topflight material and several chart-toppers, Barry Whites star began to dip a bit with this 1976 release. Though not as disappointing as later albums like Sheet Music, Is This Whatcha Wont? still wears thin at times because of some weak tracks -- "Dont Make Me Wait Too Long" and "Now Im Gonna Make Love to You" find White recycling past glories and stretching his proto-disco magic a wee thin. Maybe he was just opting for a lighter production approach than before, but even taken more as pop ephemera and less like some dancefloor classics, these tracks still falter, especially under the weight of Whites preferred extended-mix mode. Nevertheless, theres a lot of quality stuff to be had, especially sensual slow burners like "I Wanna Lay Down With You Baby" and "Your Love -- So Good I Cant Take It" (the latter featuring fine work by Whites guitarist at the time, Ray Parker, Jr.). Also included here is the up-tempo hit and Philly bump sound-alike "Im Qualified to Satisfy You." There are plenty of White and Gene Pages top-notch arrangements, too; during the disco era, who did strings better than these two? Those who want to explore Whites output from the latter half of the 70s should first check out the excellent Let the Music Play. White fans, though, could certainly do a lot worse than picking up this highly enjoyable record.

The Man : Allmusic album Review : 1977s Barry White Sings to Someone You Love put him back on the right side of the charts. He shed the pomposity that landed him in the cutout bins by as early as 1976. In contrast to this albums predecessor, Barry White Sings for Someone You Love, theres more of a balance between the dance tracks and ballads. "Look at Her," "Youre Sweetness Is My Weakness," and "Sha La La Means I Love You" all employ Latin flourishes and tough horn charts. Although his Latin seemed closer to Ricky Ricardo than Tito Puente, Whites good spirits and the crack backing band make it all worthwhile. The sensual "Its Only Love Doing Its Thing" does its business in under five minutes with White saying, "Let me put my hand right there/Lord have mercy." On the ballads he seems a little more reflective than usual. As they somewhat diminished Barry White Sings for Someone You Love, the ballads enrich The Man. On his cover of Billy Joels "Just the Way You Are," he gives the lyrics complete seriousness and somehow makes them bittersweet. "Early Years" has a flamenco-styled guitar and an autumnal arrangement. The track gives him to a depth beyond "relationships," even though it was clear from his disconsolate delivery that his reminiscing didnt exactly make him feel any better. With such rich and varied songs, The Man might be the only album one might need from Barry White, but it will make you seek out even more of his catalogue.

I Love to Sing the Songs I Sing : Allmusic album Review : I Love to Sing the Songs I Sing was issued as the same time as Barry Whites CBS Records debut The Message Is Love, with most of the attention going towards the latter. Its a shame because its one of the maestros best albums. The title track single was his homage to Motown. There are several sweet ballads -- "Girl, Whats Your Name," "Once Upon a Time," and "Oh Me, Oh My, (Im Such a Lucky Guy)." The delicious up-tempo tracks "I Cant Leave You Alone," "Call Me Baby," and "How Did You Know It Was Me" are jams and feature horns, a rarity on White tracks. Thankfully, this album was reissued as a 1996 Polygram CD. The White-produced My Musical Banquet from Love Unlimited Orchestra met a similar undeserved overlooked fate.

Barry & Glodean : Allmusic album Review : Barry and Glodean White combined for a delightful LP that got overlooked. After the dark, moody opening "Our Theme" the husband and wife team gets busy on the infectious "I Want You," and the Motown ish "Youre The Only One For Me." On tracks 4, 5, and 6 they beg the pop/easy listening audience . . . maybe a bit too much, for fans of Whites satiny brand of soul. They get back on track with "You," but fall back off with the disjointed "You Make My Life Easy Livin." Simply lovely is "Didnt We Make It Happen," a Barry White, Danny Pearson composition and one of the CDs four strongest tunes. It begins with Whites traditional rap, and fans into a beautiful mid-tempo floater. The slow, erotic "Baby," concludes a fine effort.

Just for You : Allmusic album Review : With 70s nostalgia being quite the rage in the early 90s, Mercury set out to cash in on the trend with this three-CD box set by one of the top soul/disco men of that decade. Though three CDs is a bit much for novices (who would be better off with the 1995 single-CD anthology All Time Greatest Hits), more seasoned White devotees will find that theres a lot to admire about this comprehensive package. Essential 70s hits like "Im Gonna Love You Just a Little More, Baby," "Cant Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" and "Its Ecstasy" are included, along with gems he produced for the female group Love Unlimited Orchestra (including the sexy "Walking in the Rain with the One I Love" and his instrumental-oriented Love Unlimited Orchestra ("Loves Theme" and "Satin Soul," among other hits). And the set also contains some of Whites more recent work, such as 1989s "L.A. My Kinda Place" and a remake of Lisa Stansfields "All Around the World" that finds him forming a memorable duo with the British singer. Despite the fact that some of the newer selections arent essential, Just for You does a fine job of summarizing Whites many post-1971 accomplishments.

Gold : Allmusic album Review : Gold follows a handful of major Barry White compilations released since the 70s, including Casablancas two-volume Greatest Hits (released in 1975 and 1981, then on CD), the three-disc 1992 box set Just for You, 1995s All-Time Greatest Hits, and 2002s two-disc The Ultimate Collection. Many of the sets in Hip-O/Universals Gold series amount to reissues of two-disc anthologies released during the early 2000s through labels distributed by Universal, and this one is not an exception -- its exactly like The Ultimate Collection, albeit with different visual presentation. As any Barry White fan would be quick to tell you, White was so much more than a large, oversexed, deep-voiced novelty. He was a tremendously prolific and gifted songwriter, arranger, and producer. Even without all the albums released under his own name, hed have quite a legacy with Love Unlimited and the Love Unlimited Orchestra, not to mention his stint in A&R; and behind the scenes work with Gene Page, Gloria Scott, Danny Pearson, and Webster Lewis. Gold includes five Love Unlimited Orchestra tracks -- the big guns, like the number one pop single "Loves Theme" and the number one club single "My Suite Summer Suite," as well as the pleasant surprise of "Midnight and You" -- but otherwise concentrates on Barry Whites solo-in-name releases, ranging from 1973s "Im Gonna Love You, Just a Little More Baby" (number one R&B;, number three pop) to 1979s "It Aint Love, Babe (Until You Give It)" before picking back up with 1987s "Sho You Right." (White released albums during the intervening years that are not represented, and Universal wouldve had to license roughly ten charting singles from them to be thorough). The extensive back catalog of his other ventures could use a whole lot of love, but Gold offers about as much lush and exquisitely arranged soul music as one could hope to get in two and a half hours.

All-Time Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits -- part of Mercurys Funk Essentials series -- finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from Whites heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B; Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection on the market. It includes the edited single versions, not the full-length album tracks, which actually makes for a more digestible introduction to Whites achievements. Like his forebear Isaac Hayes, White was not just a deep-voiced crooner, but a talented producer and arranger whod spent years honing his craft behind the scenes in the industry. And like Hayes, White spent a great deal of time setting up moods on his albums, using lush, sweeping orchestrations to build very gradually to climaxes. (Actually, that probably explains a good deal of his effectiveness.) But White was not simply a Hayes disciple; his swirling productions were less complex than Hayes, but more in tune with the emerging disco sound, which certainly boosted his popularity. Plus, he took full advantage of R&B;s new lyrical permissiveness in the wake of Marvin Gayes Lets Get It On. If his voice was limited, it was also a tremendous asset for the kind of music he recorded -- deep, resonant, caressing, but always suggestively masculine. The total package made White an R&B; love-man icon not just for the disco era, but all time. For all but the most dedicated fans, All-Time Greatest Hits is one-stop shopping.

The Icon Is Love : Allmusic album Review : Barry White has been to the top of the charts an admirable number of times, but only one of his hits was a ballad (a studio effort for the Quincy Jones album Back on the Block that included El DeBarge, James Ingram and Al B. Sure!). However, as a solo artist, White has never had a ballad usurp the number one spot on the Billboard charts. The Icon Is Loves featured release fills that void. "Practice What You Preach," which unites the maestro with producers Gerald LeVert and Edwin Nicholas, has a simmering arrangement, evocative lyric, and Whites brawn delivery. The catchy melody and sensuous female backing vocals enhance this already stellar single. It stayed on the Billboard R&B; charts for 30 weeks and had a consecutive three-week run at number one. White showcases his seductive, bassy baritone with romantic rap introductions on most of the selections. There is a balance of uptempo and balladic songs. The other two featured releases were "Come On" and "There It Is." The former is reminiscent of his days as the king of disco-swing, and the latter is a contemporary funky ballad. Respectively, they tipped in at 12 and 54. White, who is credited as producer and writer on every selection, embraces the savvy writing talents of industry veterans Barry Eastmond and Michael Lovesmith, and the keen production skills of Chuckii Booker (his godson), Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and Jack Perry.

The Ballads : Allmusic album Review : Most compilations of this nature -- 12 tracks, budget-priced -- tend to feature at least several well-known singles that received significant airplay. Thats not the case with Barry Whites volume of Ballads, which features only three charting R&B; singles: "Ive Got So Much to Give" (number five, 1973), "Put Me in Your Mix" (number eight, 1991), and "Dark and Lovely (You Over There)" (a number 29 duet with Isaac Hayes, 1992). The extensive selection of deep album cuts isnt bad; White doesnt receive enough credit for being a strong album artist. However, the set wont appeal to those who expect to hear familiar material, and more serious fans have double-disc sets like Gold, box sets like Unlimited, and the studio albums. Either Icon or Icon 2 will provide a better -- if similarly brief -- overview.

Let the Music Play : Allmusic album Review : In between his run of gold in the first half of the 70s and a pre-comeback sabbatical in the 80s, Barry White produced this top-notch album in 1976 as one of a long line of releases on the 20th Century label. While not full of any Top Ten pop hits, the six tracks do feature minor successes in "Baby, We Better Try to Get It Together," "You See the Trouble with Me" (co-written with Whites guitarist at the time, Ray Parker, Jr.), and the title track. Whites disco arrangements are of the highest order here, full of sophisticated orchestrations and silky but solid funk-lite rhythm tracks. The lyrical content, though, does not speak of the endless nights of lovemaking and blossoming relationships addressed in earlier songs, but instead focuses on the hurdles and downside of love. White expertly couples his subtle vocal delivery with just the right amount of pathos to highlight the lover on the outs. Something of an overlooked gem, Let the Music Play is a must for Barry White fans and qualifies as a fine choice for listeners looking for something beyond the singers base of hits.

Staying Power : Allmusic album Review : By the late 90s, Barry White was primarily known as an icon. His music was well-known, but his voice was known better, as it stood for the epitome of sultry, sexy soul. And, befitting his icon status, he could still support a large audience in concerts, which led to new recordings -- recordings that were minor hits upon their release, but never eclipsing his classic hits. Staying Power, his first album since 1994s The Icon Is Love, fits neatly into that category. It certainly is an enjoyable album, since Whites voice is aging remarkably well and the production is uniformly appealing, but its never a memorable one. Like most contemporary albums by veterans, its littered with cameos that are designed to broaden his audience and increase chances of airplay. With the exception of the Bone Thugs N Harmony duet "Thank You" -- which is the worst track on the album -- they all work pretty well, and the Chaka Khan & Lisa Stansfield showcase "The Longer We Make Love" is very good indeed. However, the record sounds the best when the spotlight is on White. Nevertheless, once the album is completed, its hard to remember any of it, even if it was enjoyable as it spun. Which means Staying Power is a standard-issue iconic release -- its classy and entertaining, but doesnt add to the legacy.
