Biffy Clyro
Allmusic Biography : Known for their anthemic alt-rock, Scotlands Biffy Clyro are a dynamic power trio marked by the throaty lead-vocal brogue of singer/guitarist Simon Neil. Emerging in the early 2000s, Biffy Clyro drew loyal fans with their grunge, hardcore, and prog-rock-influenced sound that found them combining hooky choruses with unusual song forms and galloping rhythmic meters. While their early albums helped build their fan base in Britain, they broke through to an international audience with 2009s Only Revolutions, which peaked at number three on the U.K. album charts and earned a Mercury Prize nomination. The band continued to experiment, issuing the double-disc Opposites in 2013, and the soundtrack album Balance, Not Symmetry in 2019.

Assembling in the late 90s in the town of Kilmarnock near Glasgow, Scotland, Biffy Clyro featured a three-piece lineup fronted by vocalist and guitarist Simon Neil along with James Johnston (bass) and drummer Ben Johnston. Playing loud combinations of pop/rock inspired by the music of bands like Weezer, Biffy Clyro first started by playing their aggressive pop tunes in the nearby Glasgow club scene, eventually enjoying a stable and enthusiastic response from their audiences. After releasing their first EP, Thekidswhopoptodaywillrocktomorrow, via the Electric Honey record label, the band managed to secure some airplay on Scotlands BBC, which opened the way to even more exposure on the Scottish music scene. Not long after, the trio signed a recording contract with Beggars Banquet and offered their first single, "27," in October 2000. In the following months, the group played numerous live shows, including one opening slot for their longtime idols Weezer. In February 2002, the crew offered yet another single, simply titled "57," before the release of their long-awaited debut full-length, Blackened Sky, issued in March of that same year.

A year later, the more elaborate The Vertigo of Bliss appeared. Constant touring to support the album kept the band busy until mid-2004 when they recorded Infinity Land, which was released late in the year. Three years later the successful single "Saturday Superhouse" announced the coming of their fourth album, Puzzle. In 2009, Biffy Clyro released their fifth studio album, Only Revolutions. Featuring such singles as "Mountains," "Bubbles," and "Many of Horror," the album was both a critical and commercial success, going platinum in 2010 and earning several accolades including a Mercury Music Prize nomination. In 2012, Biffy Clyro released an online video trailer announcing their forthcoming sixth studio album, Opposites. A sprawling, ambitious work balancing prog rock with mainstream, radio-ready pop, Opposites was released in 2013. Buoyed by the single "Black Chandelier," the album became the bands first ever to hit number one on the U.K. album charts. They spent much of that year headlining their second world tour.

Biffy Clyro returned in 2016 with the full-length album Ellipsis. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Muse), the album featured the singles "Wolves of Winter" and "Animal Style." They went on to promote the album with an open-air set in Glasgow, and headlined the Reading & Leeds festival in 2016 and the Download Festival in 2017. November of 2017 saw the group perform a stripped-back, unplugged set at Londons prestigious Roundhouse. The performance was released as a live album the following spring and featured a cover of the Beach Boys "God Only Knows." In 2019, they supplied the soundtrack to director Jamie Adams film Balance, Not Symmetry.

Blackened Sky : Allmusic album Review : Scotlands Biffy Clyro had been linked to the sportswear punk of blink-182, Green Day, and Sum 41 and were championed for sounding more raw and less obvious than any of their contemporaries. But while their debut, 2002s Blackened Sky, hunched over with a gray, very American anger, it also lacked the ideas or abnormal structures of favorites Fugazi and Mudhoney. "Hero Management" was probably the most successful mixture of spangly basslines and damp indie rock, but, unlike Seafood, an outfit theyre more accurately compared to, the band came across as all of the least interesting aspects of American grunge released a decade too late.

Puzzle : Allmusic album Review : Although emo is often thought of as a direct descendent of punk and alternative, the genres tricky song structures oftentimes teeter toward prog territory. Case in point: Puzzle, the fourth full-length by Ayrshire, Scotlands favorite sons, Biffy Clyro. While the riffs and singalong choruses bear a resemblance to Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, its no secret that the members of this trio obviously know the ins and outs of their respective instruments -- this is certainly not the sound of a band still finding its footing. "Saturday Superhouse" somehow manages to not sound far removed from all the fresh-faced MTV darlings, while also including enough interesting bits to not sound like a mere mainstream rock rehash. Harder to pin down tracks such as "Whos Got a Match?" bring to mind the quirky pop of Supergrass, and "Semi-Mental" is comparable to Weezer -- if they spent more time studying their Rush records instead of Cheap Trick ones. Released in the U.K. several months ahead of the U.S., Puzzle already has a head start in the buzz sweepstakes -- its a certified smash overseas (nearly topping the album charts at number two, while "Saturday Superhouse" almost reached the Top Ten on the singles charts).

Singles 2001-2005 : Allmusic album Review : Singles 2001-2005 focuses on the Scottish punk-pop outfits tenure with Beggars Banquet, highlighting tracks from the bands first three albums Blackened Sky, The Vertigo of Bliss, and Infinity Land. Released to capitalize on the success of 2006s Puzzle, the bands first release for 14th Floor (an offshoot of Warner Bros.), Singles serves as decent primer for new listeners but a frustrating one for longtime fans, many of whom consider Biffy Clyro to be an album band (at least up until Puzzle). That said, as far as gateway drugs go, Singles provides a decent enough high to facilitate a return trip, especially on the strength of high-energy emo/power pop/prog gems like "27," "57," and "The Ideal Height."

Only Revolutions : Allmusic album Review : Understandably pleased with the success of their mainstream breakthrough album, Puzzle (2007), Biffy Clyro dont change much on the follow-up effort, Only Revolutions. Like Puzzle, it finds the Scottish alternative rockers at their most immediate and accessible. Once again they work with producer Garth Richardson and smooth out the rougher aspects of their early recordings, the Beggars Banquet albums Blackened Sky (2002), The Vertigo of Bliss (2003), and Infinity Land (2004). They restrain their prog tendencies, keeping the songs short and concise, and amplify their melodic side, recording with a full orchestra. They include a few mellow tunes on Only Revolutions, "God & Satan," "Many of Horror," and "Know Your Quarry," yet Biffy Clyro are still at their best when they let it rip. "That Golden Rule," "Bubbles," "Mountains," and "Booooom, Blast & Ruin" are highly charged rockers that race along quickly and shift gears often. These album highlights are edgy and rock hard, yet theyre graced with memorable hooks and melodies at the same time. Now and then the bands pop/rock is off balance, for instance the album opener, "The Captain," which leans too far toward pop for comfort. Among the standout rockers, the previously released "Mountains" from 2008 and the lead single "That Golden Rule" are both great, and "Bubbles" is even better. Featuring Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age on second guitar, "Bubbles" has it all -- hammering riffs, adventurous jams, ear-pleasing chorus, sharp dynamics -- and its the albums longest and most satisfying song, rocking for a full five minutes whereas most other songs on Only Revolutions are over and done with a minute or two sooner.

Revolutions: Live at Wembley : Allmusic album Review : The complete opposite of an overnight success, hirsute three-piece Biffy Clyro were Scotlands best-kept secret for over half a decade before the rest of the U.K. wisely began to wake up to their blistering prog rock sound. Highlighting their remarkable career turnaround, their first live album, Revolutions: Live at Wembley, shows how far theyve traveled from their homelands toilet circuit scene, with a 19-track set performed in front of 12,000 fans at Londons most famous arena at the end of 2010. Recorded just a year after their fifth album, Only Revolutions, earned them their second consecutive Top Three chart position, its no surprise that the Mercury Music Prize-nominated effort makes up the bulk of the set list (only "Cloud of Stink" and "Know Your Quarry" are omitted), as the trio pummels its way through the likes of the anthemic hit single "Mountains," the crunching rock opera of "That Golden Rule," and the highly charged Muse-esque "The Captain," as well as revealing its mellower side on the contemplative "God & Satan" and, of course, "Many of Horror," which much to the bands amusement is now far better known as the lead single from X Factor winner Matt Cardle. Five tracks from 2007 breakthrough Puzzle also make the cut, including the tender ballad "Machines" and "Folding Stars," an emotive tale inspired by the death of lead singer Simon Neils mother, and Neils solo acoustic renditions manage to retain a sense of intimacy despite the imposing surroundings. But while the handful of tracks from their first three albums, Blackened Sky ("57"), The Vertigo of Bliss ("Diary of Always"), and Infinity Land ("Glitter and Trauma"), may draw a blank from those new to the Biffy fold, its these old-school additions that receive the most rapturous response from the longtime fans whove stuck with them ever since their early Beggars Banquet days. Revolutions: Live at Wembley isnt representative enough to be considered the defining live Biffy Clyro experience, but its a captivating and suitably grandiose affair that explains why they have finally made the leap from student venue favorites to arena rock gods.

Opposites : Allmusic album Review : Biffy Clyros 2013 album, Opposites, is the bands sixth studio effort and follows up the bands hugely successful 2009 Mercury Prize-nominated release, Only Revolutions. Whether appreciated as a double- or single-disc album (the band released both versions), Opposites is a sprawling, ambitious work that once again finds the Scottish rock trio balancing its prog rock inclinations with its undeniable talent for mainstream, radio-ready pop. In that sense, Biffy Clyro are certainly one of the most album-oriented, 70s-style rock acts of their generation -- though their sound is hardly retro. On the contrary, with lead singer/guitarist Simon Neil belting in a thick brogue over the bands knotty, metal-influenced arrangements, Biffy Clyro come off more like a Scottish version of Fugazi than, say, a classic rock band like Rush, although there is a twinge of nerd-rock power here, too. There is something very concept album-esque about Biffy Clyros Opposites, especially when taken in the entire two-disc format. Its very laser light show-friendly, as many of the songs here are heavy with loud guitars, frenetic drumming, and intricate, multi-layered arrangements. Primarily, however, the album rides on the kind of anthemic, crowd-pleasing pop songs that made Only Revolutions such a success. Where last time we got the melodic bombast of "Mountains" and "Many of Horror," here we get the equally as wide-eyed "Sounds Like Balloons" and the romantic, soundtrack-ready "Biblical." Ultimately, Biffy Clyros gift as a band is to craft songs that balance immediately catchy hooks with complex arrangements that only help to reinforce the drama of the pop moment. Thankfully, there are plenty of these dichotomous yet rapturous moments on Opposites.

Ellipsis : Allmusic album Review : Named after the three periods at the end of a sentence that indicate an omission or unfinished idea, Biffy Clyros seventh studio album, 2016s delightfully compact Ellipsis, is a power blast of an album that finds the Scottish outfit knocking out a tidy set of crisp anthems. Produced by the band and Rich Costey (Muse, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine), Ellipsis follows up the groups ambitious 2013 double album Opposites. However, it feels more connected to their breakthrough Mercury Prize-nominated 2009 effort, Only Revolutions. As with that album, Ellipsis showcases the trios knack for crafting muscular punk-prog numbers with choruses that beg for stadium-sized crowd singalongs, just as they challenge fans with unexpected phrasing and the occasional odd time signature. Although there isnt anything as monumental as "Mountains" off Only Revolutions, there are still some decidedly infectious moments on Ellipses. Cuts like the lead-off "Wolves of Winter" and "On a Bang" are passionately delivered, wicked-tongued hard rockers that frame lead singer Simon Neils addictive brogue yawp with spring-loaded basslines, hard-driving drums, and brutal, thickly compressed electric guitar riffs. Conversely, tracks like the yearningly romantic "Re-Arrange" and the acoustic guitar-based "Medicine" prove that, while Biffy Clyro can hang with the heaviest of guitar bands, theyre also adept pop songwriters with emotive, poetic souls. Its a balance they perfect here on cuts like the driving Queens of the Stone Age-sounding "Animal Style" and the late-album standout "Howl." While the album title implies that Biffy Clyro have something more to say here, the truth is that Ellipsis is a pleasingly efficient album that never sounds incomplete or labored. If anything, Biffy Clyro have discovered new ways to boil down their more complex thoughts and emotions into snarling, meaty pop slogans. As Neil sings on "Howl," "So, Im gonna howl like an animal/Cause lately its hard to let you know..."
