| Crack the Sky : Allmusic album Review : The astonishing success of Crack the Skys eponymous first album raised expectations that the band was never able to fulfill for the rest of their career. Critics and audiences alike delighted in the wry, intelligent lyrics, complex and powerful progressive rock, and carefully crafted harmonies. Radio programmers were more ambivalent. Songs like "Ice," "Shes a Dancer," and "Surf City" all got nationwide airplay, though none actually became a real hit. All of them deserved more attention, but the label never focused their promotional efforts on any one of them, and as a result there was no hit single. (Shades of Moby Grapes first album.) Rolling Stones designation of Crack the Sky as "Album of the Year" for 1975 helped did as much as anything the record company did, and in retrospect their award was well-deserved. The album still holds up very well, especially the delirious "A Sea Epic," one of the rare examples of a driving and complex progressive rock song with a really good sense of humor. Three years and two albums later, when Crack the Sky did a live album, most of the songs were from this album. They obviously knew where their best material was and played to their strengths. | Dog City : Allmusic album Review : Led by singer/lyricist John Palumbo, long-time Baltimore band Crack The Sky released Dog City in 1990. With progressive leanings and one ear cocked toward AOR radio, Dog City is a well-thought out effort that chronicles discontent and urban decay in an often melodic manner. Palumbo is a solid if unspectacular vocalist, and his lyrics work except when he tries to avoid being too self-conscious. "Love Me Like a Terrorist" is a melodic song about sexual role-playing wrapped in a pop/metal sheen, and wouldnt sound out of place on a Def Leppard record. On "Lost Boys," Palumbo details street-gang life over a melody that, especially during the opening, resembles Pink Floyds "Wish You Were Here." However, by the middle of the album on the appropriately titled "Quicksand," things begin to bog down as the band falls prey to the usual excesses found in the prog rock genre, and they never manage to regain their footing. | ||

| Ghost : Allmusic album Review : Crack the Sky deliver an album of prog rock goodness as they approach their 30 year anniversary on Ghost. It seems as though the band has given up on incorporating accessible elements into their sound, which is just as well considering their best material is their most bizarre material. Thick, King Crimson-esque songs like the title track are where the band truly shine, especially considering the way they compose hypnotic melodies. They seem to have a similar style of songwriting as Genesis-era Peter Gabriel, composing odd vocal lines over repetitive riffs and synth lines while spouting reflective and frank lyrics about living dirty, mentally unsafe lifestyles. Like any prog rock album, this will definitely have its detractors, this is simply a genre that isnt for everybody. On top of that, this isnt as good as their 70s material, although it is a big step in the right direction after a rough period in the late 80s. Fans of the band should definitely check this out, while fans of the genre may want to start earlier in their career before moving on to this album. | ||
