Raw Power : Allmusic album Review : In 1972, the Stooges were near the point of collapse when David Bowies management team, MainMan, took a chance on the band at Bowies behest. By this point, guitarist Ron Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander had been edged out of the picture, and James Williamson had signed on as Iggys new guitar mangler; Asheton rejoined the band shortly before recording commenced on Raw Power, but was forced to play second fiddle to Williamson as bassist. By most accounts, tensions were high during the recording of Raw Power, and the album sounds like the work of a band on its last legs -- though rather than grinding to a halt, Iggy & the Stooges appeared ready to explode like an ammunition dump. From a technical standpoint, Williamson was a more gifted guitar player than Asheton (not that that was ever the point), but his sheets of metallic fuzz were still more basic (and punishing) than what anyone was used to in 1973, while Ron Asheton played his bass like a weapon of revenge, and his brother Scott Asheton remained a powerhouse behind the drums. But the most remarkable change came from the singer; Raw Power revealed Iggy as a howling, smirking, lunatic genius. Whether quietly brooding ("Gimme Danger") or inviting the apocalypse ("Search and Destroy"), Iggy had never sounded quite so focused as he did here, and his lyrics displayed an intensity that was more than a bit disquieting. In many ways, almost all Raw Power has in common with the two Stooges albums that preceded it is its primal sound, but while the Stooges once sounded like the wildest (and weirdest) gang in town, Raw Power found them heavily armed and ready to destroy the world -- that is, if they didnt destroy themselves first. [After its release, Iggy was known to complain that David Bowies mix neutered the ferocity of the original recordings. In time it became conventional wisdom that Bowies mix spoiled a potential masterpiece, so much so that in 1997, when Columbia made plans to issue a new edition of Raw Power, they brought in Pop to remix the original tapes and (at least in theory) give us the "real" version wed been denied all these years. Then the world heard Pops painfully harsh and distorted version of Raw Power, and suddenly Bowies tamer but more dynamic mix didnt sound so bad, after all. In 2010, the saga came full-circle when Columbia released a two-disc "Legacy Edition" of the album that featured Bowies original mix in remastered form]

Metallic K.O. : Allmusic album Review : There was a time when you really had to hunt for a copy of Metallic KO, chasing false lead after false lead until you finally came upon that backstreet record store that had imported a copy or two of the vinyl (and marked the price up accordingly). Today the thing is everywhere, and in so many perplexing permutations that, sometimes, you wish the CD revolution hadnt made everything so easy for people. Make them work again for their music -- it would mean an awful lot more to them if they did. Because Metallic KO means the world -- to anyone and everyone who ever sat down and unsuspectingly dropped needle onto wax and then reeled back in horror; this aint rock & roll, its a snuff movie. And the fact that it all sounds so tame these days just shows how much its become a part of the language. This is not the "true" Metallic KO. Spread out over two CDs, it serves up six songs apiece from the two shows that were boiled together for the original vinyl -- doubling the length of the LP, but maybe diminishing the impact some. But still, through lurching takes of "Open Up and Bleed," "Heavy Liquid," and the ever-inspiring "I Got Shit" (all of which are new to the package), past the familiar dissolution of "Head on the Curb," "Rich Bitch," and "Cock in My Pocket," and into the nightmare closure, this remains rock & roll so far out on the edge that you get dizzy just listening to it. And, by the time the last glass explodes at the end of the worlds greatest "Louie, Louie," youll be ready to take on anything.

Rough Power : Allmusic album Review : The final mix by David Bowie of the Stooges final studio album has been a subject of open debate since the day of its release in 1973. Some see it as a total botch job, with the vocals and guitar overdubs set so far out front of the bass and drums (collapsed into mono, stripped of its high frequencies, then echoed to death) as to appear comical. Others see it as a mix every bit as anarchic as the music itself. That debate is fueled even further by the first legal appearances of these alternate mixes done by Iggy and the Stooges prior to Bowies intervention. On tracks like "I Need Somebody" and "Gimme Danger," the focus is much sharper than the released version, while on others ("Hard to Beat," "Raw Power," "Search and Destroy") Iggys vocal is obscured by liberal doses of too much echo. An aircheck from early 1973 gives us grainy, abrasive speeded up alternates of seven more tracks and the compilation closes with three more from late in 1972, clearly showing that the boys had theories on mixing that were every bit as off the wall as Bowies finals. Final score: not necessarily better, but very different.

Year of the Iguana : Allmusic album Review : Theres little doubt that in the 20 years plus since their demise as a group, Iggy and the Stooges have achieved legendary status as the seminal and defining influence on the late-70s punk rock movement; without them, there would have been no Sex Pistols, etc. And in those intervening years, they have found themselves being exhaustively documented, with seemingly every scrap of magnetic tape bearing their imprint coming up for reissue air at one time or another. This is an interesting collection thats primarily culled from other Bomp CD collections and 10" vinyl LPs. If youre into Iggy and the Stooges enough to have made it this far, this collection of alternate mixes ("Death Trip"), raw rehearsal tapes ("Rubber Legs," "Head On," "Till the End of the Night," "Wild Love," and an extended run-through of "Raw Power"), and "suppressed masters" from the original Raw Power sessions ("I Got A Right," "Gimme Some Skin," and "Scene of the Crime") will almost seem like a greatest-hits package of sorts. And for the new fan whos just discovered the chaotic magic that was the Stooges -- and has heard the rumors that theres material far more incendiary than their three studio albums -- this compilation will serve just that purpose, sifting through the unending maze of unissued Stooges material to make a single-disc package that hits on the spots. This make a nice stopping-off point before moving on to the groups live masterpiece, Metallic K.O.. The transfers are well done here (considering the point of origin of several of them) and for a compilation pulled from multiple and disparate sources, this collections hangs together remarkably well, providing the hardcore fan with a one-stop loaded with rarities.

California Bleeding : Allmusic album Review : The era surrounding Raw Power seemed to be Iggys personal Let It Be, yielding a seemingly bottomless well of unreleased recordings. Never mind that these are mostly tinnily recorded, disjointed live recordings -- this is the Igster, after all, who has a small but committed fan base that wants to devour every bit of self-destruction available from the period. This is another installment, and probably not the last, in the series, culling nine tracks from California shows in late 1973 and early 1974. In addition to perennials like "Search & Destroy," and you get less-traveled items like "Wet My Bed," "She Creatures of the Hollywood Hills," and "Heavy Liquid/New Orleans." Much of this was previously unreleased anywhere, or previously unreleased in the U.S. Yet the sound quality isnt even that good by bootleg standards, and none of its essential to anyone but wild-eyed fans. But the liner notes, which go into about Iggys most decadent early- to mid-70s history, are pretty good.

Michigan Palace 10-6-73 : Allmusic album Review : The description of this October 6, 1973 show in the brief liner notes as "the best sounding of all the unreleased Stooges tapes" might cause your heart to leap into your mouth as you speculate whether this -- unlike just about all the other live Stooges issued by Bomp -- might actually be listenable. Dont get your hopes up too high. It might indeed be better than such execrable-fidelity vault finds as Double Danger, but within the context of live Stooges CDs, that doesnt amount to much more than saying that its better to live on cat food than dog food if theres no other choice. Although this was (again, according to the liner notes) recorded on guitarist James Williamsons reel-to-reel, the sound quality is low enough that its a chore to endure, the vocals tinny (if often actually comprehensible), the mix blurry, the whole thing at once harsh and murky. If this is indeed the best unreleased live Stooges, youve got to conclude that the band could simply not be captured adequately on unauthorized equipment, or that they never cared to record themselves well onstage even if they were aware a tape was running. As for the music, its a pretty typical set of the bands dying days, with faves like "Raw Power," "Search & Destroy," and "Gimme Danger," broken up by hipster "Im more on the edge than any of you" raps from Iggy Pop. Maybe Stooges fans are the kind to adopt the title of Iggys autobiography, I Want More, as a credo for insatiable hunger regarding any audio document of his, but you should only check this out if you subscribe to that philosophy.

Telluric Chaos : Allmusic album Review : When the Stooges reunited for a handful of live dates in the summer of 2003, fans wondered if this was only a brief fling, or something a bit more substantial. To the delight of fans, Iggy and the Ashetons decided to take it to the stage throughout the world -- playing subsequent shows over the next year in Europe and Japan. 2005s Telluric Chaos chronicles a Stooges show from early 2004 in Japan (as with all the shows from this period, Iggy and the Ashetons are joined by former Minutemen bassist Mike Watt and Fun House sax blower Steve MacKay). Anyone lucky enough to catch the group around this time can attest that the group never sounded better, and Iggy never screamed/performed as well as here, especially on such standouts as "1970," "TV Eye," and two readings of "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Except for only a handful of songs, almost all the tracks from both of the Stooges classic releases, 1969s Stooges and 1970s aforementioned Fun House are represented, as well as a few of the "Stooges tracks" from Iggys 2003 solo outing Skull Ring. Additionally, you get a brand-new/previously unreleased Stooges tune, "Idea of Fun," as well. Full of energy and boasting very good sonics, Telluric Chaos is easily one of the best Stooges live albums to ever surface.

More Power : Allmusic album Review : Many of the recordings collected on 2-CD 2009 compilation MORE POWER have been released on bootleg or indie labels in one form or another for more than three decades. So we should be grateful to the archivist label Cleopatra for finally gathering them all in one convenient place in these newly-remastered versions. Make no mistake however--these are still mostly the quintessentially lo-fi so-called "Detroit Rehearsal" tapes that were recorded in 1973 in preparation for a nation-wide Iggy & the Stooges tour following the release of the David Bowie-produced RAW POWER earlier that year. Iggy Pop and guitarist James Williamson were still in the midst of a major songwriting binge so the band was essentially rehearsing brand new songs like ""C**K in My Pocket," "Johanna," and "Open Up and Bleed," all prime material for a fourth Stooges album, one which unfortunately never came to be. (One would have to wait till 2007s THE WEIRDNESS to pick up where the band left off).

So these versions are all that remain of the original proto-punk tracks which have influenced modern rock & roll down to the present day. It doesnt hurt that the band, despite well-documented health and drug issues, was in peak working condition. The under-rated Williamson was a kind of American Keith Richards; both his songwriting and playing brought to the Stooges a musical finesse they never quite had before, despite the undeniable though still simple brilliance of FUN HOUSE when Ron Asheton handled the guitar duties. Asheton (who reluctantly moved to bass) and his drummer brother Scott still remain the best rhythm section that Iggy Pop ever had. Most of these rockers, including the famed punk-era 7" "I Got A Right" b/w "Gimme Some Skin," can still burn up the airwaves. Not only classic punk but the hardcore scene which emerged soon after owes everything to them, as influential in their way as Dylans "Basement Tapes" were on a much different strain of American music.

The Detroit Tapes : Allmusic album Review : Most of this two-disc, 18-track set of the Stooges jamming and rehearsing in the studio is drawn from the so-called “Detroit rehearsal tapes,” recorded when the band was preparing to go on the support tour for the just released David Bowie-produced Raw Power in 1973. Some of these tracks, though, were new songs intended for the Stooges fourth album, which unfortunately never appeared after the band was dropped from its label. This is true garage punk, the sound of a band trying to pull fragments together in a garage, riffing on electric blues tunes like “I’m a Man,” speedballing through “I Got a Right,” trying out the ragged Stones-like ballad “Open Up and Bleed,” and at one point, tackling the Trashmens “Surfin’ Bird” before charging into the Kingsmens “Louie, Louie.” The recordings are pretty raw sometimes, but then so were the Stooges, and make no mistake, this is how they sounded. It was punk before punk was born.

Ready to Die : Allmusic album Review : Ready to Die arrives with none of the heady expectations of The Weirdness, the 2007 comeback that found Iggy Pop and the Asheton Brothers, aided by the sturdy Mike Watt, attempting to re-create some of the madness of Funhouse. For a variety of reasons it didnt work, but it wasnt so much an embarrassment as it was, well, weirdness, from a band weighed down more by its own ongoing internal tensions than its legacy. A little over a year after its release, Ron Asheton died and the group did what they did last time they were hanging by a thread: they brought in guitarist James Williamson. Back in 1973, he was the fuel that propelled Raw Power, an album that found Ron sitting in uneasily on bass, and he and Iggy recorded a bit after the Stooges final 70s implosion, but after 1980 he retired from music, choosing to pursue electrical engineering. So, in a sense, Williamson was further removed from rock & roll than Ron Asheton, who always plugged away in a variety of Ann Arbor- and Detroit-based rock bands, which makes the success of this second-phased Stooges reunion all the more remarkable. Because Ready to Die feels like a Stooges album in all the right ways, throwing out the halting, lurching hard murk of The Weirdness in favor of successive blasts of sleaze, intermittently interrupted by the occasional moment of reflection. Ballads were verboten in the olden days -- whenever the Stooges slowed the tempo, they got mired in a dirge -- so this pair of quiet ones suggest an older band, one filled with musicians facing their seventies (perhaps thats the origin of the title?), but the rest of Ready to Die showcases grizzled, gnarly vets who not only know how to deliver the goods but take pleasure in doing so. That sense of joy is a new wrinkle for the Stooges: at their purest, their fun was nihilistic, celebrating the joy in destruction. Here, theres a sense of joy in still being alive and still being able to make noise. Much of that comes from Williamson -- who not only writes and plays guitar but produces the album, giving it a clean, efficient attack -- as the guitarist seemingly relishes the opportunity to get back into the game. If he takes things seriously, Iggy most decidedly does not, happily succumbing to silliness -- hes on his knees for those Double Ds, bringing to mind the Iggy whos always anxious to encore with "Louie Louie" -- and that reckless vulgarity is preferable to the strained pretension of The Weirdness, particularly when its supported by the righteous noise of the reconstituted Stooges. Liberated from the weight of their history, theyre just ready to rock while they still can, and thats why Ready to Die is, against all odds, a terrific Stooges album.
