Gong
Allmusic Biography : Gong slowly came together in the late 60s when Australian guitarist Daevid Allen (ex-Soft Machine) began making music with his wife, singer Gilli Smyth, along with a shifting lineup of supporting musicians. Albums from this period include Magick Brother, Mystic Sister (1969) and the impromptu jam session Bananamoon (1971) featuring Robert Wyatt from Soft Machine, Gary Wright from Spooky Tooth, and Maggie Bell. A steady lineup featuring Frenchman Didier Malherbe (sax and reeds), Christian Tritsch (bass), and Pip Pyle (drums) along with Allen (glissando guitar, vocals) and Smyth (space whisper vocals) was officially named Gong and released Camembert Electrique in late 1971, as well as providing the soundtrack to the film Continental Circus and music for the album Obsolete by French poet Dashiel Hedayat.

Camembert Electrique contained the first signs of the bands mythology of the peaceful Planet Gong populated by Radio Gnomes, Pothead Pixies, and Octave Doctors. These characters along with Zero the Hero were the focus of Gongs next three albums, the Radio Gnome Trilogy, consisting of Flying Teapot (1973), Angels Egg (1974), and You (1975). On these albums, protagonist Zero the Hero is a space traveler from Earth who gets lost and finds the Planet Gong, is taught the ways of that world by the gnomes, pixies, and Octave Doctors, and is sent back to Earth to spread the word about this mystical planet. The bandmembers themselves adopted nicknames -- Allen was Bert Camembert or the Dingo Virgin, Smyth was Shakti Yoni, Malherbe was Bloomdido Bad de Grasse, Tritsch was the Submarine Captain, and Pyle the Heap. Over the course of the trilogy, Tritsch and Pyle left and were replaced by Mike Howlett (bass) and Pierre Moerlen (drums). New members Steve Hillage (guitar) and Tim Blake (synthesizers) joined.

After You, Allen, Hillage, and Smyth left the group due to creative differences as well as fatigue. Guitarist Allen Holdsworth joined and the band drifted into virtuosic if unimaginative jazz fusion. Hillage and Allen each released several solo albums and Smyth formed Mothergong. Nevertheless the trilogy lineup reunited for a few one-off concerts including a 1977 French concert documented on the excellent Gong Est Mort, Vive Gong album. Allen also reunited with Malherbe and Pyle as well as other musicians he had collaborated with over the years for 1992s Shapeshifter album. Hillage also worked as the ambient-techno alias System 7. A number of Gong-related bands have existed over the years, including Mothergong, Gongzilla, Pierre Moerlins Gong, NY Gong, Planet Gong, and Gongmaison. During the new millennium Gong material continued to be released, including Live 2 Infinitea issued in fall 2000, as well as numerous reissues. I Am Your Egg appeared in 2006 from United States of Distribution. Meanwhile, Gong in various lineups featuring Allen and Smyth continued to perform and record intermittently, up to final album I See You released in 2014, before Allen succumbed to cancer in Australia on March 13, 2015 at the age of 77.

Magick Brother : Allmusic album Review : In 1970, the world got its first taste of the original pothead pixie, Daevid Allens Gong, as Magick Brother was released in France on the BYG label. Allens wife, Gilli Smyth, penned all the tunes on the album, and Allens now-classic "Ph.P." drawing style graces the inside of the gatefold. Leaning a little toward the pop end of the spectrum, Magick Brother is a fairly light album, devoid of the blatant psychedelic/hippie qualities which shine through so brilliantly on the later Camembert Electrique. Smyths "space whispering" makes its debut on the opening track, though the album is not as spacy as it is ethereal. "Gong Song" is a highlight, with lyrics describing a pothead pixie who came down from the planet Gong to sing his green song -- the roots of the Gong myth. Allens guitar sound is a bit flat and hollow throughout the project, dynamics taking a back seat in most of these recordings. He relies on distortion and various guitar augmentations, but this all works quite well in the context of the collective sound. Much of the vocal harmonizing on the album is typical of many 60s pop troupes and sounds fairly dated today. Didier Malherbes sax and flute playing spices up this mostly pop-oriented prog rock outing, helping to make this a cut above the radio norm. Although this is an interesting release, especially for its status as the first Gong project, it is not typical Gong and is not recommended as a starting point for sampling the bands recordings.

Angel's Egg: Radio Gnome Invisible, Part 2 : Allmusic album Review : The companion piece to The Flying Teapot, Angels Egg is not your usual progressive rock album. Very quirky, with many, mostly brief compositions, the album is a tad less spacy than Teapot, with just a few psychedelic-inspired lyrics, and its very technically adept. Angels Egg opens with a true space rock cut (one of the few on the album), filled with the usual Gilli Smyth space whispering and Daevid Allen voicings, then leads into the cleverly titled "Sold to the Highest Buddha," with Steve Hillage and Didier Malherbe prominent figures. The instrumental "Castle in the Clouds" finds Hillage coming into his own, with a sound identical to his solo work. "Givin My Love to You" sounds like a bar song, with no music and a cluster of seemingly drunken fellas trying to sing. The instrumental "Flute Salad" gives way to "Oily Way," a showcase for Malherbes jazzy flute. "Inner Temple," an instrumental space rock track, moves along with a jazz edge, provided by Malherbes sax. The final three tracks are the real highlights on Angels Egg. "I Never Glid Before" is a fantastic prog rock tune, replete with blistering Hillage solo, primo Allen lyrics and vocal, and the precise percussion of new bandmember Pierre Moerlen. This eclectic composition travels through several movements and time changes, and comes across as a perpetually progressing piece. The imaginative and jazzy "Eat That Phone Book Coda" brings the album to a close.

Flying Teapot: Radio Gnome Invisible, Part 1 : Allmusic album Review : Produced by Giorgio Gomelsky, notable for his work with the Yardbirds, Brian Auger, and Magma, this relatively early Gong project is a great representation of the Daevid Allen-era Gong. Though not as intricate as its follow-up companion piece, Angels Egg, The Flying Teapot is more of a true prog/space rock outing, where hippie-trippy lyrics and space whispering abound, as evidenced in the opening track, "Radio Gnome Invisible." The following cut, "Flying Teapot," is the sprawling highlight of the album. At times reminiscent of some early Weather Report jams, though not as jazzy, the tune features prominent bass, standout percussion/drums, and space whispering courtesy of Smyth. Improvisational groaning and percussion bring this jam to a close. "Pothead Pixies" is a fun pop (pot?) tune which probably received very little, if any, airplay due to the lyrics, followed by Blakes brief synth interlude, "The Octave Doctors and the Crystal Machine." "Zero the Hero and the Witchs Spell," another lengthy composition, features Malherbes sax playing, which, at this early point in the Gong evolution, is credited for most of the jazz sounds heard in the music (remember, Pierre Moerlen has yet to join the band). This cut becomes quite heavy near its end before making a clever transition into the final cut, "Witchs Song/I Am Your Pussy." Here you hear Smyths strange, sexually explicit lyrics, which she embellishes with ethereal voicings and cackling. This, combined with a jazzy sax from Malherbe and some very groovy musical lines near the closing, make for another fun tune.

You: Radio Gnome Invisible, Part 3 : Allmusic album Review : You is the final installment in Gongs legendary Radio Gnome Trilogy, and it marks an important turning point for the band. By 1974, the psychedelic hippie/folk-rock element of the sound that was leader Daevid Allens most important contribution was beginning to disappear. In its place was a more sophisticated musical vision that owed as much to jazz-rock fusion as to fellow space rockers like Pink Floyd and Hawkwind. Ironically, this is Gongs most "spacy" album, full of extended, ethereal passages that would inspire future generations of space rockers. The sound was equally defined however, by the jazzy flights of saxophonist Didier Malherbe and the sinuous rhythms of bassist Mike Howlett and drummer Pierre Moerlen (the band would eventually become the fusion-oriented Pierre Moerlens Gong). Allens songs still provide a crucial link to the rest of the trilogy, though the conceptual/mythological aspect is less crucial to You.

Shamal : Allmusic album Review : Between Daevid Allens departure from the band and Pierre Moerlens official takeover of the band, there is Shamal. This transitional album contains none of the Allen-inspired psychedelia, but also very little of Moerlens jazz influence. Shamal is, for the most part, a progressive rock album, half vocal, half instrumental. Its most accessible tune, the opening "Wingful of Eyes," had the potential for airplay if only it hadnt been so lengthy. Penned by Mike Howlett, his not-so-great-but-appealing vocal style and lyrics will grow on you, given the opportunity. "Bambooji," mostly instrumental, opens with Didier Malherbes flute, which at times gives this tune an Asian sound. Percussion and flute dominate and yield a Scottish feeling as well. "Mandrake" is the soft, laid-back piece on the album, followed by the closing title cut, a slight foreshadowing of the sound Pierre Moerlen and company assumed on the next several albums. Moerlen, an outstanding, classically trained drummer/percussionist, along with Jorge Pinchevsky on violin color this piece with a Mahavishnu Orchestra hue, although its still distinctly Gong.

Expresso II : Allmusic album Review : As interesting and fun as the Daevid Allen period was, the name Gong became more meaningful in the context of the music as percussionist Pierre Moerlen assumed the role of bandleader. An emphasis on percussives of all sorts became clear on Gazeuse!, the bands first completely instrumental album, and the music became much jazzier, though never considered jazz. Expresso II finds Pierre Moerlens Gong at their peak. Like their previous studio release, Gazeuse!, the album is instrumental, the music is very polished, the sound very clean. Vibes and xylophone dominate on this album, somewhat reminiscent of the sound Zappa achieved through Ruth Underwood on One Size Fits All just three years earlier. The first two tracks, "Heavy Tune" and "Golden Dilemma," are the highlights here, partially due to the fact that the rest of the cuts all blend together and sound quite similar. The listener is pleasantly assaulted with a barrage of vibes, yet what a unique sound it is when heard on a rock-oriented album. Guitar combos rarely get much better than on "Heavy Tune," as Mick Taylor rips out leads over Allan Holdsworths grinding rhythm guitar. The collective guitar sound achieved is one of restrained power; however, the piece can comparatively be considered a rocker. Gong shifts to a different gear with the following track, "Golden Dilemma," a faster-paced, jazzy piece with incredible solos from guitarist Bon Lozaga. Formerly of Curved Air, Darryl Ways violin is a highlight on "Sleepy" and "Boring" (neither of which apply). "Sleepy," which combines Ways violin with Holdsworths guitar leads, prefigures the sound of the first U.K. album (Holdsworth went on to form U.K. with violinist Eddie Jobson). A very short album, Expresso II is possibly the strongest of the post-Allen Gong, and an essential album.

Shapeshifter : Allmusic album Review : For their first album of new material in over 20 years, the real Gong (i.e., one led by Daevid Allen and containing a number of players from the classic 60s-70s period) offer -- well, much of what made them so popular in the first place. Theres an impish sense of humor to the lyrics, Gilli Smyths deeply echoing space whisper, stunning sax and flute work from the criminally underrated Didier Malherbe, and plenty of trademark glissando guitar from Allen himself. Goddesses are invoked, gnomes are mentioned, and rhubarb is eaten, among many other things. Guitarist Steffi Sharpstrings fills what was Steve Hillages role with plenty of post-punk energy, but really it all revolves around Allens personality and some stunning music. Times been kind to Gong. Their pioneering space rock ways found a home with the ambient crowd and their music shows theyve listened to whats gone on and incorporated it into their sonic journey, which is part prog rock, part jazz, and part just out there. "Can You: You Can," a live cut from 1992, with its wonderful improvisations, is a prime example, although even better is the long closer "Goddess Inovation/Om Riff," where they hammer to infinity and beyond. Veteran Pip Pyle shows a light, steady touch on the drums, Allen is even more inventive than before, and the refusal to take themselves completely seriously keeps it floating along. Having this band together before recording in the studio was obviously a good idea; they mesh perfectly, and its good to have a classic back, energetic and full of ideas.

Live on TV 1990 : Allmusic album Review : It might not be the original Gong (too many member changes for that), but the soul of the band certainly returns after 15 years for this recording, a concert for television. The material is all drawn from the past, some from the Radio Gnome Trilogy, some earlier, with only one later piece ("Gorbachev Cocktail"). But its also performed with the same skill and self-deprecating, winking humor the band had always employed. Certainly, theres been no loss of ability in the intervening decade and a half, with saxophonist Didier Malherbe a standout. Former Pink Fairy and Pretty Thing Twink guests on snythesizer, a very good fit with this bunch of cosmic pot-head pixies. Perhaps because this is made for TV, theres not so much instrumental stretching-out; only the last two tracks give any room. But thats fine, since Gong was always a balance of playing and strong songs, and the spotlight gets to shine on the latter this time out; time hasnt dimmed their appeal one bit. Allen is in superb form, more ringmaster than bandleader of this motley and talented circus. Resurrected by the ambient movement, Gong proves theres much more to what they do than whooshy space rock. Theres jazz, prog, poetry, and a wicked sense of humor tempering the mix, making them men (and women) for all seasons. A welcome return for a band who spent much of the early 70s deflating the pomposity of prog rock. Grab a cup of tea and listen.

You Remixed : Allmusic album Review : When it first appeared in 1975, the last volume of the Radio Gnome trilogy also appeared to be the weakest. You had neither the joy nor the songs of the first two albums -- a possible reflection of the dissension that was going on in the group -- and it seemed to be only the sheer force of leader Daevid Allens personality that finished the record. But perhaps the very fact that the space rockers songs werent so strong or cohesive here has helped make it prime fodder for the remixers; theyre not cutting up things that were already a perfect whole. Gong could certainly be a proto-ambient band, and a piece like "A Sprinkling of Clouds" now seems tailor-made for reworking, which it is here, twice, once by producer Youth, who takes it on a slightly psychedelic journey, and also by System 7 -- essentially former Gong guitarist Steve Hillage -- whose interpretation carries obvious authority and a great deal of beauty. While pride of place on this collection has to go to the Orb, who do brilliant sonic trickery to "A P.H.P.s Advice," the relatively unknown Orlando takes Yous centerpiece chant, "You Are I and I Am You," and hurtles it out to space, lapping and pulsing. Given that there are 16 cuts here -- and none of them short -- its inevitable that this is a double CD. But because of the individuality of the remixes (and no one seems to have phoned in their contribution, although the unknown Glo seems a little lacking in inspiration), it never palls or drags. Probably best heard on headphones, You becomes an even better ambient experience in its new incarnation.

Live 2 Infinitea : Allmusic album Review : Live 2 Infinitea was recorded live during Gongs European tour in Spring 2000, following the release of the studio album Zero to Infinity. Although it does serve as an addendum to the 1995 live set The Birthday Party, it delivers more than that. Special care has been taken not to duplicate tracks already included on the latter (except for "Inner Temple," but this one is really only a frame for jamming) and once-discarded old obscurities like "Zero the Hero and the Witchs Spell," "Tropical Fish," and "Selene" get an inspired (and much welcomed) treatment. The remainder of the set is taken (and derived) from Zero to Infinity, including the energy-packed "Zeroid" and "The Mad Monk." The band is a lot tighter than in 1995 and original members Daevid Allen (vocals, guitar), Gilli Smyth (vocals), Mike Howlett (bass), and Didier Malherbe (saxes, flute) are joined by Soul II Soul drummer Chris Taylor, saxophonist Theo Travis, and the enigmatic keyboardist Gwyo ze Pix. Travis blows some mean solos and contributes the jazzy number "Yoni on Mars." Except for the disappointing song "Bodilingus" (well performed but simply weakly written), this disc is fabulous Gong candy for the fan. While The Birthday Party was drowning in its own nostalgia, Live 2 Infinitea presents a band still very active, engaging, and relevant. Sound quality is excellent, although some crowd noises are intrusive on "Zeroid."

Zero to Infinity : Allmusic album Review : Australia-born spacehead Daevid Allen began appearing on recordings by progressive/psychedelic/art rock pioneers Soft Machine and Gong in the late 60s and early 70s. Allen and the other members of his proto-hippie aggregation Gong quickly established themselves as a rather wacky alternative to groups of Englands so-called Canterbury music scene, such as the Softs as well as Caravan, Hatfield and the North, and National Health. Roughly 30 years later in the year 2000, the comparatively serious-minded Canterbury outfits were either long gone or hanging on by a thread, but Gong was back in action with Zero to Infinity, one of the strongest releases ever by the Daevid Allen version of the band. (The fusiony Gong ensemble led by drummer Pierre Moerlen during the late 70s featured a number of the same players but was quite a different animal.) Zero to Infinity was part five of Gongs "Radio Gnome" saga, a whimsical tale about the adventures of protagonist Zero the Hero and the many cosmic characters he encounters on mystical journeys through space and time. As in previous Gong efforts, some of the best stuff happens when the band stretches out and jams. In "The Invisible Temple," a midtempo modal space-funk vamp clocking in at over 11 minutes, vocalist Gilli Smyths vivid imagery of myriad life forms ascending through "vast concentric rings" intertwines with nice solos from alto saxophonist Didier Malherbe, guitarist Allen, and especially new tenor saxophonist Theo Travis. Originally penned in 1969 and appearing on Allens comparatively low-key Good Morning! album in 1976, "Wise Man in Your Heart" is a wistful ballad embedded with old-fashioned hippie idealism. Featuring one of Allens most earnestly delivered and affecting vocal performances, "Wise Man" derives its floating quality in part from Mike Howletts repeating bassline that punctuates the tune in an off-meter cycle. Like most of Zero to Infinity, the song is gorgeously produced, a bit slick but with the same warm qualities that can be found, for example, in the production work of Daniel Lanois with Peter Gabriel or Brian Eno. While Zero to Infinity works most of the time, it is not without the occasional clunker, such as "Bodilingus," a musical exploration of the aging Allens body parts set to a 1970s-style disco arrangement. Still, Gong were in fine form throughout most of the albums journey. Thirty years on, and Daevid Allen still managed to walk a pop music tightrope, balancing the artful and the absurd while remaining true to his vision of music as a spiritually liberating force. Zero to Infinity found the Divided Alien and his fellow Gong travelers persisting with their optimistic message from the 1960s, happily out of sync with the prevailing currents of more cynical times.

Acid Motherhood : Allmusic album Review : Ever since its 25th anniversary tour in 1994, Gong had been sounding like a caricature of itself. Sure, the energy was there, the entertainment too, but the group was relying heavily on its past repertoire and, even in the new songs, still sounded like they were plowing the same fields as in the late 60s. Meanwhile, leader Daevid Allen obviously preferred to pool his creative energies into his U.S. group, University of Errors, whose albums kept growing stronger and more personal. And then came this bombshell, Acid Motherhood. Gongs lineup is here completely rehauled and consists actually of a merger between latter-day Gong, University of Errors (guitarist Josh Pollock, incredible), and Acid Mothers Temple (Makoto Kawabata and Cotton Casino). The resulting sound is heavier, wilder, and noisier than anything else Gong has previously released, but if you had to stamp only one band name on the cover, it would have to be Gong, without the slightest doubt. Despite Kawabatas mad psychedelic work, Casinos unstoppable synths, and the heavier-than-ever rhythm section, Acid Motherhood is still as whimsical, lighthearted, and entertaining as any of Gongs prime releases. "Supercotton," written as a group effort, is one of Allens typically delirious stories, delivered over a complex, shifting, and upbeat prog rock song. "Brainwash Me" and "Waving," both co-written by Allen and Pollock, are excellent songs, the first one a stomping monster, the second a delicate acoustic guitar affair. Sprinkled between these songs are meaty instrumentals: "Monstah!" is simply a killer riff, while "Makototen" is the genuine lets-go-nuts jam. Its also the closest the band gets to the Acid Mothers Temple sound: 14 minutes of an insistent beat and atonal guitar exchanges. Did Gong have to prove it deserved to carry on into the 21st century? Yes. Did it succeed? Holy shmoly, it did! Highly recommended.

2032 : Allmusic album Review : With Gong now standing as less of a band than a constantly revolving way of life, into which the composite parts rise and fall depending upon who actually wants to be involved, 2032 is nevertheless one of the precious few albums that really can be aligned with the "classic" Gong era -- that is, the days of Flying Teapots and Pothead Pixies, glissando guitars and spooky space whispers. With Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, and Miquette Giraudy all on board, it is understandably being billed as a continuation of the original Radio Gnome mythology, and there are definitely moments when it fits the bill perfectly. "Escape Control," "Guitar Zero," and the epic lunacy of "Wacky Baccy Banker" are all keynotes to the chaotic tale, and if the casual listener is left wondering precisely what its all about, then that only adds to the magic that is the nature of Gong. Unfortunately, 2032 has a tendency to meander, too, in ways that the original band rarely did; so many years, after all, have elapsed since this team last got together with a musical vengeance, and so many new interpretations have been piled upon their pixied little potheads, that even they have apparently forgotten what they were trying to say. More than one moment here is a caricature; more than one could be a Gong tribute band, doing its best to recapture the real thing but falling just short of the post. Self-conscious silliness, after all, rarely works well, and 2032 does indulge in rather a lot. At the same time, though, its still Gong and, when its good, its still great. And that makes it all worthwhile.
