| Allmusic Biography : Led by classically trained drummer Christian Vander, the Paris-based Magma have been, in their way, perhaps the ultimate progressive rock group; while other artists have achieved greater commercial success and critical acclaim, Magma have typified the many ambitions and excesses of the genre that won them as many detractors as fans, even going so far as to invent their own lyrical and musical language in order to bring their unique vision to life. The son of a jazz pianist, Vander initially followed in his fathers footsteps, modeling his technique on the work of John Coltrane alum Elvin Jones and starting his career with a number of jazz and R&B; outfits. While in Paris in 1969, however, he was struck by a vision of Earths spiritual and ecological future so disturbing to him that he decided to explore his fears by musical means, assembling Magma with the aid of wife and vocalist Stella, singer Klaus Blasquiz, and fusion bassists Francis Moze and Jannick Top. As outlined on the groups eponymous 1970 double-album debut, Vanders tale -- projected to be told over the course of ten LPs -- pitted Earth against a rival planet named Kobaia. Over the course of 1971s 1,001 Centigrade and 1973s Mekanïk Destructïw Kommandoh (recorded with a choir), the story -- much of it told in native Kobaian -- unfolded to depict an Earth so uninhabitable that its citizens must flee to the nearby planet, where years of conflict culminated in the achievement of cosmic harmony and a reconciliation with the deity Ptäh. Chart success was not forthcoming, and after a few early tours of the U.S. and Britain Magma spent the middle years of the decade almost exclusively in France, where they launched records including 1974s Kohntarkosz and the next years Live. After the commercial failure of 1976s Üdü Wüdü and 1977s Inédits, Magma essentially disbanded, although the group lived on in various forms, as alumni founded a number of loosely affiliated splinter groups to carry on Vanders work, while a number of bands -- including Art Zoyd, Univers Zero, Ensemble Nimbus, Happy Family, and Koenji Hyakkei -- would be influenced by Magma during the years to follow. In 1983, Vander himself resurfaced with the acoustic project Offering, but later returned to more grandiose designs with Les Voix de Magma, an attempt to resurrect his early material for a new generation of listeners. In the mid-‘90s Vander re-formed Magma proper -- including Stella Vander, various musicians new to the Magma fold, and appearances by members of the bands earlier lineups -- and they began an extended period of recordings and live appearances featuring both new music and material from their "classic" period. In 1995 the album Kohntarkosz Anteria (K.A.) appeared as the second part of a trilogy that began with the Kohntarkosz album in 1974; the third and final part of the trilogy, Emehntehtt-Re, was issued in 2009. Meanwhile, Magma documented a number of their live shows on both CD and DVD releases, including the La Trilogie au Trianon CD and DVD sets recorded at the band’s 30th anniversary concerts in Paris during May 2000 and the Live in Tokyo two-CD set recorded in 2005. Magma also performed music from 35 years of the band’s history during a four-week residency at the Le Triton club in Paris during May of 2005; the Le Triton concerts were documented on the four-volume Mythes et Légendes DVD series released between 2006 and 2008. | ||

| 1.001° Centigrades : Allmusic album Review : For 1,001 Degrees Centigrade, Magma underwent several personnel changes: guitarist Claude Engel departed without being replaced, and Alain Charlery and Richard Raux made way for Louis Toesca (trumpet) and Jeff Seffer (sax, bass clarinet). This was the second installment in Magmas Kobaïan saga. With lyrics again performed in the bands invented language, the album chronicles the Kobaïan peoples return to Earth to save the planet. Despite that conceptual continuity with the groups self-titled debut, this was a somewhat transitional work in musical terms. It shares the first albums jazz direction but also anticipates Magmas subsequent journey into a genre of its own making, one that owed as much to Carl Orff as it did to rock music. 1,001 Degrees Centigrades divergent sonic identities are encapsulated in the track distribution on the original vinyl release. Penned by Teddy Lasry (woodwinds) and François Cahen (keyboards) respectively, side twos "Iss Lanseï Doïa" and "Ki Ïahl Ö Lïahk" are fairly standard exercises in Soft Machine-style jazz-rock. Apart from some complex instrumental sections and some idiosyncratic Kobaïan vocal stylings, theres nothing especially memorable, and certainly nothing innovative, about these numbers. The records original side one, given over to the 22-minute Christian Vander composition "Rïah Sahïltaahk," is another story entirely. Again displaying a jazz orientation with its multiple phases, its abruptly changing time signatures, tempos and intensities, as well as its shifting instrumental emphases (horns, woodwind, electric piano), this epic track also breaks new ground for Magma. Although it lacks the fluidity and the truly grand symphonic gravitas of the bands subsequent magnum opus, Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh, it more than hints at that albums strident, martial rhythms and its Carmina Burana-esque choral dimensions. Ultimately, 1,001 Degrees Centigrade is by no means a classic Magma record, but "Rïah Sahïltaahk" stands out as an excellent document of a band approaching its masterpiece. | ||

| Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh : Allmusic album Review : There is definitely quite a large step from Magmas second LP, 1,001 Degrees Centigrade, to this one, their third. At the same time, MDK represents a transitional period: drummer/composer Christian Vander has definitely abandoned the jazzier leanings of the previous opuses and has now dived head first into martial hymns and a new form of progressive devotional music -- extraterrestrial gospel. But he has also chosen to retain the brass section that gave Kobaïa and 1,001 Degrees Centigrade their signature sound. Therefore, the music has yet to become the relentless rhythmic kaleidoscope that the future would promise. MDK was introduced in the LPs original liner notes (an illuminated delirium by Vander, who rechristens himself Zebëhn Straïn dë Geustaah -- his text, the essence of which is a revelation transmitted to him by the Prophet Nebëhr Gudahtt, is the key text in Magmas mythology) as the third movement of Theusz Hamttaahk, but it was the first one recorded. The previous two movements are "Theusz Hamttaahk" itself, often performed live but not recorded at the time, and Würdah Ïtah, which would become the groups next album. All three album-length pieces share elements (some lyrics, rhythmic cells, and chord sequences), but they are individual stand-alone pieces. MDK showcased for the first time the incredible range of singer Klaus Blasquiz and introduced the ground-moving work of bassist Jannick Top, with and for whom Vander will develop an increasingly rhythm-heavy style, already present here. Between the meticulous developments of "Hortz Fur Dëhn Stekëhn West," the possessed free-form screams in "Nebëhr Gudahtt," and the hymnal chorus of "Mekanïk Kommandöh," MDK is one giant creative blow to the guts, and unsuspecting listeners will be left powerless at the end of its onslaught of mutated funk, pummeling gospel rock, and incantatory vocals in a barbaric invented language. It remains one of Magmas crowning achievements (together with Kohntarkosz) and the best point of entry into Christian Vanders unparalleled musical vision. And if the literary concept bothers you, just ignore it: the music has more than enough power to do without it. | ||

| Köhntarkösz : Allmusic album Review : Magmas famed "Kobaian" saga took a detour with this 1974 release. Drummer Christian Vanders band had heretofore specialized in a brand of progressive rock that had more in common with the Teutonic grandeur of Richard Wagner than the Baroque ornamentation of Yes or Gentle Giant. Kohntarkosz witnessed a change in sound to something altogether stranger, yet by many accounts, more conventionally beautiful. Vander is on record as saying he was worried that other artists had been "stealing" his ideas (most notably, Mike Oldfield, who had been a studio visitor during the sessions for Mekanik Destruktiw Kommanoh), and that may have been the impetus for the new direction. This album emphasized smoother, more textural arrangements than previous Magma efforts. The cyclical themes in the two-part title suite, along with the trance-inducing repetition of the group vocals, were a far cry from the controlled martial fury of earlier records. However, the lengthy solo jam in "Kohntarkosz, Pt. 2" demonstrates that Magma was hardly married to convoluted themes and languages; the band could work up an improvisational fire with the best fusion bands. Jannick Tops "Ork Alarm" is a short piece featuring aggressive cello and guttural vocals that is perhaps out of place on this album; Vanders gorgeous "Coltrane Sundia," an homage to the late jazz legend, ends Kohntarkosz on a solemn, peaceful note. Although the definitive version of the title suite is found on 1975s Magma Live, this record stands alongside the best Magma studio releases. | ||

| Üdü Ẁüdü : Allmusic album Review : Udu Wudu is the fragmented follow-up to Magmas successful 1976 Live set. Leader Christian Vander relinquished some control over the group for this album, only writing about half the music. From the start, the signature Magma sound is noticeably different, to which the quaint rhythm box-generated Latin beat flavoring the title track attests. Also, synthesizers are used throughout the album (to varying degrees of success) and most of the songs are short (three to four minutes) with simple, almost catchy melodies. Bassist Bernard Paganotti wrote "Weidorje." Heavy synths date this tune, and the rather mellow, optimistic vibe (which it shares with the title track) does seem uncharacteristic of a band known for singing about the end of the world. During the course of recording, Paganotti would leave Magma to form his own band, named after this song. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the album lies in the compositions of bassist Jannick Top. "Soleil DOrk" and especially "De Futura" perfectly capture the simultaneous joy and doom of all the best Magma music. "De Futura" is an 18-minute, funky tour de force. This piece practically invented the "brutal prog" scene (à la groups like Flying Luttenbachers and Ruins) with its crushing bass and heavy, syncopated drums. That is not to say that its chaotic or disjointed, but there is definitely a primal aggression at work here that Magma rarely approached; its fierce and fun. Since it came immediately after the almost universally praised Live in Magmas discography, prog aficionados often underrate this album. Truthfully, it is not in the higher pantheon of the bands work; it lacks the cohesion of their earlier releases and veers away from the Kobaian legacy that had informed most of the bands strangeness. Synthesizers and shorter songs may have been concessions to the times or may have just been a breath of fresh air for the band. Whatever the case, the album has enough to offer that fans should investigate it. | ||

| Attahk : Allmusic album Review : After Üdü Wüdü, Magma disbanded for a time, only to reconvene a year later under a slightly different direction than before. While drummer Christian Vander had maintained general leadership of the band since the early 70s, this new phase of Magma could almost be considered a Vander solo project. His interest in funk, R&B, gospel, and pop would come to the fore, and similar to many of his prog rock and jazz fusion peers, he would mold the bands sound into something with crossover appeal. The music on this album is brighter than the previous album, emphasizing rhythm, lead vocals, and bright, fusion-informed basslines rather than murky group vocals or extended zeuhl suites. Fans of the earlier material tend to criticize this album for its lack of a "traditional" zeuhl sound in favor of a funk/fusion/zeuhl hybrid. While it is markedly different than the preceding albums, it is one of the most exciting and certainly one of the most accessible. "The Last Seven Minutes" is burning zeuhl-funk, with some of Vanders most explosive drumming on record. Although they werent singing about interplanetary war anymore (but were singing in "Kobaian"), the bandmembers never lost their intensity. This is getting closer to hard-edged fusion à la groups such as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever, but nothing that features Vanders idiosyncratic wail is going to sound derivative. Similarly, "Dondaï" might be a pleasant, unaffecting funk ballad from anyone else, but from Magma it sounds at once magical and silly. In truth, this is calm by Magmas standards, and for a while the group actually seemed willing to present relatively straightforward music. | ||

| Kompila : Allmusic album Review : Thanks to the intricate side-long suites that constitute most of the groups output, Magma is hell to compile. When the exhilaration of following the frantic pace of a 25-minute movement is central to the experience of listening to this band, any attempt at a "best-of" collection is doomed to fail and Kompila, despite the best intentions, does just that. Whoever took care of this set (no names are given) made a risky decision. Instead of presenting only a handful of key pieces, they chose to include 22 short tracks excerpted from longer works. Only the alien jazz fusion anthem "Kobaïa," the title track from the groups debut LP, and "Hhaï" (a version off the odds-and-ends collection Retrospektiw, Vol. 3) have been included unedited. "Rïah Sahïltaahk" (from 1,001 Degrees Centigrade), "Theusz Hamtaahk" (from Retrospektiw, Vols. 1-2), "Wurdah Ïtah" (from the Tristan et Iseult soundtrack), and "Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh" and "Köhntarkösz" (from both the studio album by that title and the Magma Live set) are represented by three to five excerpts each, some as short as 44 seconds, most between two and four minutes long. These excerpts cross-fade -- and not always in the most elegant way. Some tracks are so short and pointless one wonders why the producers didnt go for a single but longer and more meaningful excerpt per album. Sure, it makes a dynamic compilation, but the listener comes out of it a little puzzled about the merits of this album. | ||
